Frank, first son of Arthur G. Murphy, was born on April 12,1912. He had a
calling to the priesthood at age 7, and never wavered from it. He graduated
Summa Cum Laude from Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, NY and was
chosen to give the valedictory speech. His work on the Prepbaseball team
left him with knee trouble the rest of his life. He alsoreceived a full four
year academic scholarship to Fordham College.
Because of family financial difficulties in the GreatDepression, Frank left
college after completing one year. While 25% or more of the work force was
unemployed, he took a job with Electrolux, selling vacuum cleaners, tackling
it with such enthusiasm that he was able to provide for the families needs
and save for his return to college a few years later, since the scholarship
was withdrawn on his leaving. He graduated from college Magna Cum Laude and
was Preterdictorian speaker. Four years at Saint John'sSeminary in Little
Rock AR ended with his Ordination to the priesthood, after which he was sent
to Rome to receive his Canon Law Degree. For fifty years, he served the
diocese of Raleigh, NC as priest, pastor, and on the Matrimonial Tribunal.
Frank was compassionate and thoughtful, and completely submissive to God's
Will. He had a happy life, and a happy death at age 86.
